The forelimbs of Octodontidae (Rodentia: Mammalia): substrate use, morphology, and phylogenetic signal

چکیده
Rodents of the family Octodontidae, endemic to South America, represent a group with low taxonomic richness (six genera and 14 species) but have great ecomorphological diversity epigean, semi-fossorial, fossorial, subterranean forms. We analyzed morphometric variation in humerus ulna, possible relationship substrate preference use, presence phylogenetic signal forelimbs traits (five biomechanical indices). Our results show that, octodontids, forelimb was not primarily associated their phylogeny some attributes are highly explanatory terms function, clear differentiation between use gradient extremes (i.e. epigean forms). The two traits, development humeral epicondyles olecranon process indicative adaptive trends found Octodontidae consistent most those described for other mammals corroborate relevance characters differentiate modes locomotion or preferences.

Octomys mimax (Rodentia: Octodontidae)
Octomys mimax O. Thomas, 1920, the viscacha rat, is a surface-dwelling rodent, endemic to the Monte biome of western Argentina. The genus Octomys is monotypic and represents a basal clade within the family Octodontidae. O. mimax is strictly herbivorous and is found in low-elevation arid environments characterized by galleries or rock formations. In these environments, O. mimax nests within rock...
متن کاملMorphology of the limbs in the semi-fossorial desert rodent species of Tympanoctomys (Octodontidae, Rodentia)
Here, a detailed description of the forelimbs and hindlimbs of all living species of the genus Tympanoctomys are presented. These rodents, highly adapted to desert environments, are semi-fossorial with capacity to move on the surface as well as to build burrows. The shape, structure, and size of the limbs are described. Contrary to what was expected for scratch digging semi-fossorial species, T...
متن کاملPhylogenetic relationships, ecological correlates, and molecular evolution within the cavioidea (mammalia, rodentia).
A molecular phylogeny of the rodent superfamily Cavioidea was derived using two nuclear sequences (exon #10 of the growth hormone receptor gene and intron #1 of the transthyretin gene) and one mitochondrial gene (12S rRNA). A combined analysis produced a highly derived and well-supported phylogenetic hypothesis that differed from traditional taxonomy primarily in the placement of two taxa. Kero...

Pedetidae, or springhares, are represented by a single extant genus (Pedetes) and five extinct ones (Parapedetes, Megapedetes, Propedetes, Rusingapedetes and Oldrichpedetes of which the latter two are new). The fossil record of pedetids tends to be scanty, but remains have been found in Southern Africa, East Africa, the Maghreb, the Arabian Peninsula, Turkey and Greece. Most of the localities h...
